mate to mate at 8 | Michael Keating Kearney - Carpenter at Casey Station, Antarctica
In this episode of mate to mate at 8, Turts caught up with Michael Keating Kearney, an Irishman who - after moving to Australia and marrying an Aussie girl - decided a year in Antarctica was the next big challenge.
Mike has been living and working in Antarctica since November 2019. Originally intending to just spend a summer on the continent, he speaks about on getting to his first round of interview, it soon became evident that he would be staying on for the winter too!
In January, Mike became one of only a small handful of people to become a naturalised Australian in Antarctica. Quite a unique wow moment for Mike - you can see the story here on the Australian Antarctic Division website.
It’s fair to say, that although missing his wife and family, he is loving his experience of living in such a remote, isolated place. But it hasn’t been without it’s challenges.
